On July 10, 2025, a fire broke out in a third-floor apartment above a bakery on Mott Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown. The fire started around 2:15 a.m., reportedly due to an unattended incense stick left burning overnight. Thanks to the quick response of FDNY crews, the flames were contained within an hour. Five residents were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, but no serious injuries were reported.
Locals gathered outside the bakery—famous for its mooncakes—watching as firefighters smashed windows to vent the smoke. Mrs. Zhang, the bakery owner, tearfully handed out sesame buns to the responders. “This building is over a hundred years old,” said her son, David Zhang. “It’s more than a shop—it’s part of Chinatown’s story.”
The bakery remains closed for repairs, but a cardboard sign in the window reads: “We’ll be back. Thank you, Chinatown family.” City officials praised the community for their calm response, and Chinatown residents have already begun organizing a fundraiser for displaced tenants.
